Born into a family of Zardozi karigars in the Madanpura area of Benaras, Ustad Rafiq learned the craft from his father at age 12. He has embroidered pieces for royal families in the Middle East and high-end couture houses in Paris. His specialty is creating 3D floral motifs using real gold-plated thread.

One of the few women master artisans in the Mukaish tradition, Noor Jahan runs a workshop of 15 women artisans in Old Lucknow. Her delicate badla metallic work creates the signature shimmer that defines Lucknowi couture. She learned from her mother-in-law at age 15.
